Congregate Meal Sites

Congregate Meal Sites
More than just a meal, it is gathering with friends for a good meal. The congregate meal program is for persons 60 years of age or older, and their spouse (regardless of age). It is the place to enjoy a nutritious meal in the company of others. Information, health and social activities are regular features. There's something for everyone! Frozen meals are also available for weekends and evenings. Eligible participants are asked to pay what they feel is fair and affordable with a recommended contribution range. Individuals under the age of 60 are welcome but are required to pay the actual cost of the meal. All meals are well balanced and nutritious. The program relies on volunteers to make it successful and is sponsored with funds provided by the Older Americans Act and the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs. Contributions support the continuation of this program in our counties.
The Nutrition Program for elders provides hot, nutritious meals in a group setting to persons 60 years of age and older and their spouses of any age for a voluntary contribution and to those under 60 years for the full cost of the meal. Home-delivered meals are available to those persons who are home-bound and unable to attend meals in the group setting. Meals are designed to provide one-third of the recommended dietary allowance. Other services provided at the meal sites include health screenings, nutrition education and a wide range of social and educational activities.
Home-Delivered Meals
Area XIV provides home-delivered meals for homebound seniors who are not able to cook a well-balanced meal and don't have help from family or others during the day. They are typically provided by the local congregate meal site and delivered by volunteers or paid staff. Usually the meal is the same one that is being served at the meal site that day so it is just as well-balanced and nutritious.
Home Delivered Meals are designed for homebound individuals. Meals are available hot or frozen. The delivery of this nutritionally sound meal may be invaluable in allowing an individual to remain in his or her home. Meals comply with Dietary Guidelines for Americans of providing a minimum of one-third of the current daily recommended dietary allowances
Shelf-Stable Meals
Another option for those who want food on hand for emergencies are shelf-stable meals. They are available from most congregate meal sites. These meals feature an entre (e.g. beef stew) in a microwavable container, milk mix, a vegetable, fruit juice.
